Let’s allow coaches to transfer, too

The Spokesman-Review

Here is a thought: If we allow high school players to transfer to a different school for the purpose of better “competition,” could we also allow this for coaches? There are a number of quality coaches out there who would love the opportunity to coach at a “high level.”

It’s not fair for them to suffer through a down – or even mediocre – year when they could have the opportunity to jump ship and join a winning program for better exposure. Oops … I mean higher level of competition.

Like high school players, I am sure many coaches would accept a secondary role on a staff just for an opportunity to coach better players and win. Oops … that doesn’t sound ethical, does it?

Maybe that’s what high school sports are really about – learning the fine art of trading up so you can better your personal opportunities. To limit just players to this admired craft is a slap in the face to coaches everywhere.

The NCAA needs to take a lesson from our fine high school players. Their silly rule of having to sit out a year when transferring to a different school is ludicrous.

Players should be able to go to school where they want, when they want. It’s not their fault they keep joining loaded programs.

Let’s go, coaches – go make a name for yourself and don’t worry about who you leave behind. This is your opportunity we’re talking about. That’s all that matters.
