Sasquatch 3-point barrage sinks Peninsula in Crossover tournament

Erik Bell had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Community Colleges of Spokane’s men’s basketball team nailed 12 3-pointers in a 79-68 victory Friday over Peninsula in the first round of the Lower Columbia Crossover men’s basketball tournament in Longview, Wash.

Humberto Perez (5 for 10), Bell (4 for 6) and Jeremy Mangum (3 for 6) combined to shoot 12 for 20 from behind the arc and 15 for 31 from the field for the Sasquatch (8-1).

Perez finished with 18 points and Mangum added 12 points and six assists.

Willie Blackburn scored 15 points and Divaldo Mbunga had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates (2-3).

•Whitworth is on the road but serves as the host for the four-team St. Vincent de Paul Invite tournament this weekend in California.

The Pirates (3-2) will face UC Santa Cruz (1-9) today at 1 p.m. at Burlingame High, south of San Francisco. The tournament, which also includes Lewis & Clark College (3-5) and Cal Lutheran (2-4), Whitworth’s Sunday opponent, will benefit the Market District ministries of San Francisco’s St. Vincent de Paul church.

Whitworth will be without key reserves, 6-foot-7 center Mat Fletcher and 6-1 point guard J.J. Jones, both out for the season with injuries.

Women’s basketball

Abby Hatten scored 12 points and Marianne Zilkoski pulled down nine rebounds as CC Spokane advanced to tonight’s Whatcom Crossover tournament championship with a 50-32 victory over Bellevue (3-4) in Bellingham.

The Sasquatch (8-4) will face the winner of the late game between host Whatcom and Centralia for the championship.

•Whitworth (3-3) is traveling to Montana this weekend for two non-conference games, today at Montana State-Northern (7-2) in Havre and Sunday afternoon at the University of Great Falls (6-9).

Junior hockey

Cam Humphrey scored a hat trick as Castlegar (British Columbia) earned a 6-5 overtime victory over visiting Spokane in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play.

Leif Sherman, Brandon Lassiter, Andrew Christ, Josh Pickens and Cam Sargent each found the net for the Braves, who led 2-0 after the first period.

Federico Angel (6-3) had 24 saves to earn the win for the Rebels (15-13-1-1; 32 points), while Jason Greenwell (6-3-2) had 31 for the Braves (17-11-4-1; 39 points).
