Welcome!

As we leave the old year behind and enter a new year of wonderful possibilities, we thought it would be a good time to take a minute to consider a first impression of sorts.

If your eyes are the windows to your soul, perhaps your front door is the real window to your home.

The front door is often the first thing people notice about your home or your business. So what does your front door say about you? Is it welcoming? Is it colorful and cheery? Does it stand out like you do, or could it use a coat of paint?

For this issue, the last of the old year, photographer Kathryn Stevens captured a handful of Spokane’s most interesting front doors.

From the majestic entrance of The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist at Twelfth Avenue and Grand Boulevard, to the brand new Mobius doors in downtown, to a home on South Perry Street with its festive arched doorway, ornamented by colorful tile, the city has a plethora of interesting entrances.

What Kathryn created on her way around the city is a photo essay highlighting one Spokane’s most enduring qualities: Hospitality.

There are many welcoming and unusual front doors out there – so put your feet up and enjoy the pictures. Perhaps you will see something to inspire you to make your own front door not just more welcoming to friends and family, but also to the possibilities of the new year that’s just around the corner.
