A puckish version of Shakespeare

The middle school drama and music students of St. George’s School will perform Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” in a 1950s version.

The play is directed by Jeanne Hardie, with performances at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday in the Founders Theater, 2929 W. Waikiki Road. Both performances are free.

An added attraction is the opening of two art exhibits by St. George’s eighth-grade students, also with 1950s theme. A display of Cubist-style and string art works will be on display in the school’s Gilbert Art Gallery. An exhibit of “Midsummer Night’s Dream” artwork in the style of 1950s movie posters will be on display in the Katy Reeves Gallery at the school.

An opening reception for both exhibits is set for 6 p.m. Friday, just outside Founders Theater, before the first performance of the play.

St. George’s celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The school will host a series of events and activities during the year to honor the people and achievements of its first 50 years. The 1950s theme for both drama and art helps kick off the celebration.
