Chlorine leak delays basketball game
POCATELLO, Idaho – A chlorine leak in Idaho State University’s Reed Gymnasium swimming pool halted an ISU women’s basketball game against the Montana Grizzlies for 30 minutes Saturday afternoon.
It resumed after a Pocatello Fire Department hazardous materials team determined that the spill posed no significant risk.
The fire department sent two teams to investigate the report of a chemical smell at just after noon on Saturday.
Station 1 Captain Jim Harris said they evacuated the entire building, including the basketball game, because of the unknown potential for a hazardous spill.
The emergency workers determined the smell came from a small leak in a pipe that runs chlorine into the swimming pool’s plumbing. They turned off the swimming pools pump and rinsed off the leak, he said.
“It was not a serious spill,” Harris said.
The facility was expected to reopen today.
