Dinner to benefit athletic field project

The Spokesman-Review

Local clubs are fund-raising to build a field of dreams where kids can play competitive sports.

East Spokane and West Valley Kiwanis are working with Boys and Girls Club of Spokane to raise money to transform a concrete and weed-ridden lot into a functional athletic field.

The field, next to the Boys and Girls Club on East Providence Avenue, needs about $30,000 of work to remove debris, level dirt and add landscaping. Organizers plan to create an area where local youths can play soccer, baseball, football and basketball.

“It’s pretty unsafe to be out there at this time,” said Leigh Hernandez, program director for Boys and Girls Club. “Our whole vision is getting this done by June or July.”

The groups are hosting a spaghetti dinner on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Boys and Girls Club, 544 E. Providence Ave. Dinner costs $5 a person and includes entertainment featuring Native American dancers and young vocalists.
