5A
Defending champ: Eagle
State title contenders: Eagle, Idaho Falls
Returning state champs: Greg Einerson of Idaho Falls (won at 103 last year; at 119 this year); Chavis Jackson of Centennial (112/125); Ryan Shuman of Highland (119/125); Vance Beeson of Eagle (125/130); Sam Reading of Centennial (135/145); Aaron Williams of Centennial, now at Eagle (140/171); Luke Smith of Idaho Falls (152/160); Ryan Allen of Coeur d’Alene (189).
Area contenders for titles: Allen; Josh Manes of CdA (135); Cody Campbell of CdA (152); Jared Reynolds of CdA (160); Mark Skogrand of Lewiston (heavyweight).
Returning area placers: James Hug of Lewiston (5th at 103/112); Manes (3rd at 130/135).
Noteworthy: Eagle is seeking its third consecutive state title. But Idaho Falls should be on the Mustangs’ heels. CdA coach Jeff Moffat counts his Vikings, Centennial, Borah, Skyline and Mountain View as the challengers for third and fourth.
4A
Defending champ: Kuna
State title contenders: Skyview, Nampa
Returning state champs: Taran Robinson of Blackfoot (won at 103 last year, at 112); Kyler Wallin of Kuna (119); Brandon Palaniuk of Lakeland (won at 119 in 3A last year, at 125); Justin Gardner of Bonneville (130/135); Nate Horsley of Blackfoot (140/145).
Area contenders for titles: Palaniuk; Joey Fio of Sandpoint (119); Mike Kuber of Post Falls (171); Sheldon Cramer of Sandpoint (215); Kyle Neal of Post Falls (hwt).
Returning area placers: Mike Kuber (2nd at 171); Cramer (5th at hwt); Craig Byers of Post Falls (4th at 103/119); Bobby Kuber of Post Falls (2nd at 135); Derek Waldo of Post Falls (3rd at 145/152).
Noteworthy: Without question, 4A is the deepest tourney of the four tournaments. Skyview and Nampa will stage an entertaining tug of war. Sandpoint and Post Falls don’t have enough horses to battle for a team trophy.
3A
Defending champ: Weiser
State title contenders: Weiser, Snake River, Bonners Ferry
Returning state champs: Shawn Jones of Snake River (won at 125 last year, returns at same weight); Lance Mecham of Bear Lake (130/135); Adam Hall of Bonners Ferry (140/145).
Area contenders for titles: Hall; Kyle Payne of St. Maries (119); David Hayes of Bonners Ferry (130); Kyle Joiner of St. Maries (160); Travis Stolley of Bonners Ferry (171); Isaac Meyers of Priest River (189); Blake Cord of Timberlake (hwt).
Returning area placers: Hayes (5th at 119); Cord (2nd at 215); Jerad Madsen of Kellogg (5th at 103); Michael Ryan of Kellogg (5th at 112).
Noteworthy: Bonners Ferry earned veteran coach Conrad Garner the school’s first state trophy last year when the Badgers finished second. They should earn another this weekend. If things go as well as possible, Bonners Ferry could challenge for the title.
2A
Defending champ: North Fremont
State title contenders: North Fremont, Malad, Challis
Area contenders for titles: Jake Will of Wallace (135).
Returning area placers: Will (6th at 135).
Noteworthy: Will is looking to become Wallace’s first state champ since 1992 when Bob Schreiber, son of the coach by the same name, won at 135, Will’s division.
