High school students win ESD 101 art honors

Treva Lind Correspondent

ARTISTS AT EAST VALLEY High School keep piling up awards. A reception at Auntie’s Bookstore on Wednesday afternoon will recognize these art students and other regional winners from the 2005 Educational Service District 101 High School Art Competition. In recent years, several East Valley students in Pam Smith‘s art classes have taken top honors.

This year, 12 EVHS students received ESD 101 regional awards.

First-place honors went to Erin Stanley, with a pastel self-portrait drawing, and to Bryce Fisher, with an acrylic abstract portrait painting. Three second-place award winners were Alla Litoshyk, Christine Strong and Ong Xiong, all with self-portraits done in pastel.

Zack Deboodt won his second-place award with a clay sculpture.

Third-place winners were Anja Goetzinger‘s graphite drawing and Sagun Harper‘s pastel drawing. Honorable mentions include Ashley Vaughn‘s drawing in pastel and Krista Rosencrans‘ clay sculpture.

Three additional awards are given each year. East Valley won two of these, including Superintendents’ Best of Show Choice Award received by Dan Scully for a graphite drawing, and the ESD 101 Staff Best of Show Choice Award, which was presented to Jessie Labrie for a pastel drawing.

Professional prints of these two drawings will be made, framed and hung in the permanent collection at ESD headquarters in Spokane at its Regal Street location. Each student will receive a cash award of $40.

Other Spokane Valley high school students drew the attention of judges as well. A Central Valley High School student, Dane Knudson, got a third-place award for a clay sculpture titled “Grandma & Grandpa’s House.”

His teacher, Sue Mihalic, said Knudson is an advanced pottery student who created the sculpture replicating a home his grandparents had built a long time ago and recently sold. He worked from photographs and gave the sculpture to his grandparents as a Christmas present, Mihalic said.

Another student from West Valley High School, C. Vennum, won a third place and an honorable mention for two pieces entered in the contest.

All first-place winners will continue on to Olympia to compete in the 2005 OSPI All-State High School Art Competition. The OSPI Awards Ceremony in Olympia will be May 20.
