Corrections program offers free firewood to families

The Airway Heights Corrections Center has a program that delivers free firewood to needy families in the area.

The wood is delivered to a residence by a supervised crew of workers from the facility.

The Airway Heights Community Center aids the program by forwarding requests to the Department of Corrections.

According to J.C. Kennedy, recreation director at the center, this program is meant to be a supplement, not a sole source of heat for a residence.

“People come by and fill out an application form, and I fax it to the Department of Corrections. It’s really a DOC program. We act as a go-between,” said Kennedy.

Size of the wood varies, and it may need to be cut into smaller pieces to fit into a stove or fireplace.

Delivery time can take as long as a month, but it is usually faster.

Forms to request wood delivery are available at the Airway Heights Community Center, 13120 W. 13th, Airway Heights.
