Teresa’s View: New RL surprises with technical, comfort features

Teresa Herriman Marketing Department Correspondent

Um. Wow. I wasn’t expecting this. From the outside, the all-new, third generation Acura RL doesn’t look much different from the previous versions. Inside, the swooping dash has been revised and the requisite single-knob, multi-function interface is prominently displayed. But, looking around the plush cabin, I began to notice the sheer number of new features — eight controls on the overhead display alone — and I went for the manual.

Acura has crammed a boatload of new technical and comfort features into their 2005 baby — many of the type found on even more expensive, posh rides. There’s the power rear window screen and manual side-window versions; navigation system with voice controls; and hands-free telephone. A high-tech ignition only requires that the key be in the car.

Although the RL’s 3.5-liter V-6 is the most powerful engine ever in a production Acura, it’s not a V-8 — a demerit for those who must have the most. The 300-horsepower engine comes paired with a single transmission choice, an automatic, with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles for fun in the twisties.

The RL features Acura’s sophisticated new Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system, which provides sure-footedness without getting in the way of a little wahoo driving.

What Is It?: Acura’s flagship four-door, midsize, all-wheel-drive sedan comes in a single trim for a single price of just under $50K.

Gadget Rating: 8.9 out of 10. Acura makes a concerted effort to provide its cars with top-quality audio experience, and the RL is no different. An Acura/Bose surround-sound system comes with 10 speakers, six-disc DVD-A and CD players, plus an MP3 player, and XM satellite radio. The RL is also Bluetooth. Mega-safety features include dual-stage front airbags, side airbags for front seat occupants and side curtain airbags that run the length of the car. Anti-lock brakes and vehicle stability assist are standard. Government crash tests yielded top marks in all categories.

Favorite Feature: The first service of its kind, AcuraLink Communication System provides real-time traffic reports. Color-coded traffic flow data are displayed on the navi map with incident details. It’s available around the clock, though not in all areas.

Cheat Sheet: Acura is the premium division of Honda.
