Pirates dial three in victory

The Spokesman-Review

The Whitworth Pirates hit 12 of 22 3-point attempts en route to an 86-60 rout of Northwest Conference rival Whitman on Tuesday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Jon Young led the way with six while scoring a game-high 20 points, but six Pirates drained 3-pointers.Young, who shares the school single-game record of seven 3-pointers, finished 6 of 12 from beyond the arc.

The Pirates (7-8 overall, 3-4 in NWC play) shot 52 percent from the floor, with much of the credit going to a defense that forced Whitman (3-13, 1-6) into 42-percent shooting and 14 turnovers that led to a multitude of fast-break opportunities.

Lance Pecht came off the bench to cash in enough of those opportunities for 15 points, many coming off Bryan Williams’ eight assists.

Williams (10), George Tucker (10) and J.J. Jones (11) also finished in double figures as 11 Pirates scored.

The Missionaries tried to use their height advantage to attack Whitworth inside, and it worked enough for posts Kyle Born and Erik Kofler to combine for 34 points and 18 rebounds.
