DC Skate Team will share attitude Friday at mall

Steve Christilaw Correspondent

Get ready for a demonstration of decks and trucks and the magic that can be done when those two elements are matched with the right skater.

A demonstration by a professional skateboard team is headed to the Spokane Valley Mall parking lot Friday.

The Zumiez Couch Tour, featuring an appearance by the DC Skate Team, will run from 1 to 6 p.m. and will include live music from Coheed and Cambria, as well as video game demonstrations from Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo DS.

The Couch Tour is in its fifth year and will make stops in a dozen cities, bringing an assortment of attractions that are foreign to anyone not hip to the world of video games, skateboarding and all things kid.

First of all, you have to understand that Zumiez is a shoe and apparel brand name. A popular brand name – especially with skateboarding enthusiasts.

Next, you need to understand that skateboarding is much more than surfing down the sidewalk. It’s about ramps and tricks. It’s about attitude as well as altitude.

And while it may seem odd to some that there would be video game demonstrations at a skateboarding demonstration, you must know that some of the most popular video game titles involve skateboarding with Tony Hawk.

While Hawk won’t be in attendance, the DC skate team will – with a lineup that includes Ryan Smith, Devine Calloway, Josh Kalis, Brian Wenning, Lindsey Robertson, Ryan Gallant, Greg Myers, Rob Dyrdek, Anthony Van Engelen and a special appearance by Big Black.

Coheed and Cambria will headline on the music stage along with the local winner of the Zumiez and Jones Soda band contest.

A number of event co-sponsors will provide samples, including Jones Soda and Wonka Donutz. And there will be prizes awarded and an autograph session with the DC skaters.
