Ground Zero intervention vowed

Newsday

NEW YORK – Congress will intervene if officials in charge of redeveloping Ground Zero don’t limit the memorial there to the events of Sept. 11, three Republican legislators said Friday.

Opponents of the current plans for the International Freedom Center say the center might include exhibits critical of America that would pain the families of the victims.

The congressional action was threatened by New York Reps. Vito Fossella, Peter King and John Sweeney.

The three lawmakers said in a letter to the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. that the memorial project “may have lost the focus that seemed so clear three years ago.”

“What troubles us is the suggestion that Ground Zero is an appropriate place to host exhibits outside the scope of a September 11th memorial,” the letter said.

The exhibits are expected to include slavery, human rights, the treatment of American Indians and other issues not related to the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
