S. Perry Street Fair this weekend

The South Perry Street Fair is going through a mini makeover.

The food, music, arts and crafts and other festivities organized at the annual summer festival are all intact for this weekend, but the name has been tweaked. For the first five years, the mid-July festival had been called The South Perry Street Faire. Faire is now spelled the modern way – fair.

“It was too old-fashionie and renaissancie for some people,” explained South Perry Business Association president John Wojtulewicz. “Maybe we’ll have a treasure hunt or something to find the missing e.” Regardless of how it’s written, the street fair spells a good time where an approximate 15,000 are expected to gather Friday night through Sunday afternoon.

The fair begins Friday at The Shop, 924 S. Perry St., which also kicks off its South Perry summer theater. A different movie will be show every Saturday night, using the north wall of The Altamont Pharmacy, which is visible from the parking lot of The Shop. The movies are free, and popcorn and refreshments are available. Some seating is provided, but patrons should feel free to bring their own lawn or lounge chairs.

An adult beverage garden will be set up in The Shop parking lot this weekend during the music and movie, continuing throughout the fair. Various food booths also will be available.

The parade is scheduled for Sunday at noon. It will run south on South Perry Street from Eighth to 12th avenues, turning west on 12th Avenue to Ivory and south into Grant Park.

All types of parade entries are welcome. The entry cost is $5 (free to children 12 and under), and forms can be picked up at The Shop or online at www.southperry.com. Applications for booths and the car and vehicle show also are available at the Web site or at The Shop.

The car show committee will award plaques for all entrants and best of show prizes. For more information, call Jim Christensen at 599-5959.
