Olds Trofeo a rare car

Greg Zyla King Features Syndicate

Q: Greg, I own a 1990 Olds Trofeo, and I rarely see another model like it. Were there a limited number made? While it’s not old enough to be an antique, does it have any collector car value? It’s in good condition with only 58,000 miles. — F. Halliday, Florida

A: Your 1990 Olds Trofeo is one of the V-6 Toronado offshoots that probably will never be one of the most desired collector cars. Oldsmobile was struggling for individuality with these cars, but many felt the Trofeo looked too much like the $9,995 Calais model, even though the Trofeo listed for a hefty $24,995.

The Olds Toronado was always third in sales when it came to sibling “E Body” Cadillac Eldorado and Buick Riviera offerings, and was discontinued in 1992 due to poor sales. In 1990, Olds built 9,426 Trofeo coupes, which happened to be its best year, while sales dropped to 5,348 in 1991 and 5,197 in 1992.

Current values go anywhere from $1,900 in poor condition to $9,500 in pristine, show-car condition. The average is about $3,800 to $6,000. Even the first year Toronado in 1966 doesn’t command top dollar, with recent pricing around $15,000 for really nice ones.

You do have a rare car, but future prospects of seeing a car like yours rolling through the bidding stage on the Barrett Jackson Auction show are very slim. Good luck, and thanks for your letter.
