Hudson’s two hits help AquaSox get past Indians
Robby Hudson went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, including the game-winning RBI single in the sixth, as the Everett AquaSox outlasted the Spokane Indians 4-2 Saturday in Everett.
The Indians had chances to score early in the game but failed to capitalize.
With two outs in the top of the first, Steve Murphy and Phil Hawke each singled and John Mayberry drew a walk to load the bases, but Freddie Thon struck out to end the threat.
The AquaSox got on the board in the bottom of the first, when Casey Craig hit Broc Coffman’s first pitch of the game over the right field fence for a home run and a 1-0 lead.
Everett got scored another run in the bottom of second. With two outs, Trevor Heid walked, stole second, then scored on catcher Brian Schweiger’s single to right-center.
The Indians would tie the score in the top of the fifth as Joey Hooft led off with a walk and stole second and third. Two outs later, Terry Blount walked and advanced on a wild pitch that didn’t score Hooft, then K.C. Herren singled to right to score both Hooft and Blount.
Everett took the lead for good in the sixth. Danny Santin, the AquaSox’ designated hitter, led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on an infield out. With the infield in, Schweiger sent a ball to shortstop German Duran. Duran booted it, one of his two errors on the day, putting runners at first and third. Hudson, in just his 10th game out of the University of Texas, singled to score Santin.
Everett’s final run came in the eighth. Warren Rosebrock, making his first appearance for the Indians, hit Heid, the first batter he faced. Heid promptly stole second, was sacrificed to third by Schweiger and scored on a suicide squeeze by Hudson.
The Indians went down 1-2-3 in the ninth as David Asher picked up his first save of the season.
Jeff Gilmore (1-0) got the win for Everett, going 3 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out six. Juan Maldanado took the loss for Spokane (2-2).
