Padres 3, Indians 2: At San Diego, Adam Eaton (9-1) won his eighth straight decision, pitching seven shutout innings and driving in a run in a win over Cleveland. The Padres avoided a sweep despite only three hits, including a Brian Giles solo home run in the sixth. Jake Westbrook (2-9) allowed three hits and three runs – one earned – in six innings, walked two and struck out two.

Giants 9, Royals 7: At San Francisco, Edgardo Alfonzo hit a go-ahead single in the sixth and pinch-hitter Pedro Feliz hit a two-run double in a win over Kansas City. Rookie Lance Niekro had three RBIs, and Scott Munter (1-0) earned his first major league victory. The Giants won for the second time in 13 games.

Nationals 4, Athletics 3: At Washington, Livan Hernandez (9-2) pitched eight innings to win his eighth straight decision in a win over Oakland. Nick Johnson hit a three-run double in the third to give the Nationals their season-best seventh straight win. Chad Cordero pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances, as the Nationals won their 14th one-run victory, tied for the most in the National League.

Phillies 10, Rangers 8: At Philadelphia, Pat Burrell homered twice and had four RBIs to help Philadelphia complete a three-game sweep over Texas. Todd Pratt homered and had four RBIs and Jim Thome also connected for the Phillies, who took their 12th win in 14 games. Mark Teixeira homered twice and had five RBIs.

Reds 14, Devil Rays 5: At Cincinnati, Luke Hudson won his season debut with six solid innings on a steamy night, and Cincinnati completed a three-game sweep of Tampa Bay. Sean Casey singled home two runs in a six-run fifth, and Ken Griffey Jr. extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single. Tampa Bay, the worst road team in baseball, fell to 1-8 on its current 12-game trip.

Diamondbacks 4, Twins 3: At Phoenix, Jose Cruz Jr. homered to start a three-run fourth as Arizona defeated Minnesota. Javier Vazquez (6-4) allowed three hits in six innings for the Diamondbacks, who won for the second time in their last nine games. Justin Morneau and Jacque Jones homered for the Twins, whose three-game winning streak was snapped.

National League

Astros 6, Mets 3 (11): At New York, Morgan Ensberg hit an RBI double and Adam Everett added a two-run single in the 11th as Houston won its second road series of the season by beating New York. David Wright homered and drove in two runs for the Mets. Winner Russ Springer (1-2) pitched a scoreless inning and Brad Lidge got his 15th save.
