Doggone good bargains on pet products

Responsible pet owners know not to leave their animals in hot, parked cars and to make sure their animals have plenty of water to drink and a cool place to get out of the heat.

But here are some thoughts from the American Animal Hospital Association that might surprise even the best of pet guardians:

•If your dog has long or curly hair, consider giving it a “summer bob” to get most of the thick hair out of the way. This cools the dog and also makes grooming easier.

•Don’t let your pet drink from street puddles (particularly in urban areas), which might contain toxic antifreeze or other chemicals.

•Don’t let pets overexert themselves on hot, humid days. Pets must pant to rid themselves of excess body heat, but their “onboard exhaust system” is limited on humid days. Animals are subject to life-threatening heat stroke, just as humans.

•Save $1 on any bag of Pedigree dry food for dogs, and get one free can of canned dog food for every eight cans purchased. Offer expires Aug. 1.

•Friskies offers a $1 coupon on any three boxes 16.2-oz. or larger or one 3.15-lb. bag of dry cat food, a 75-cent coupon on any 15 5.5-oz. cans of cat food or one 32-count variety pack. Expires July 31. Friskies also offers a $1 coupon on any eight Fine Cuts or Seared Filets pouches, any variety.

•Save $1 on any size of Fancy Feast Gourmet Gold dry cat food. Expires July 24.

•Purina has a $1 coupon on any 3.5-lb. bag of dry Cat Chow, any variety or formula. Expires July 24.

•Save $1 on any Pedigree Jumbone snack food for dogs or Pedigree Trainer bite-size training snacks. Expires Aug. 22.
