Head Start fall enrollment under way
The Head Start Program is accepting applications for fall.
There are 31 sites throughout Spokane County that operate the program, each offering something unique to their respective communities.
The free programs include: Early Childhood Education; Family Assistance and Support; meals and Collaborative Approach to Preschool Education for children with special needs.
Ninety percent of families in the program must be low-income (at or below federal poverty guidelines). Other families are accepted based on need.
Children 5 years old and younger by Aug. 31 are eligible for the program.
Spokane County Head Start is a program of the Community Colleges of Spokane’s Institute of Extended Learning.

School remodeling under way
This summer crews will be installing heating, ventilation and air conditioning units at Bemiss, Grant and Regal elementary schools. The new units will increase outside airflow, creating a healthier learning environment.
These schools also will receive new roofs and more efficient insulation.
Spokane’s Garco Construction Co. was awarded the contract. These projects are funded by the 2003 facilities improvement bond.
Last summer Bemiss, Grant and Regal received new flooring, while Arlington, Sheridan and Willard elementary schools received the new roofing and HVAC system.
Arlington, Sheridan and Willard will receive new flooring and carpet this summer.
