A good book
•“Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress,” by Susan Jane Gilman (Warner Books, $12.95). This is the kind of book that you talk about. Gilman’s memoir about growing up in the ‘70s as a tutu-wearing, non-practicing Jew on the semi-rough streets of the Upper West Side of New York City will make the reader smile, gasp and often laugh out loud.
Gilman’s tales begin when she is about 4 years old. Her tales are a godsend to those of us who ever felt weird, goofy or too darn smart for our own good.
