Senators endorse resolution to study cervical cancer
BOISE – Idaho senators unanimously endorsed a resolution Monday to launch a legislative interim committee to look into preventing cervical cancer in Idaho women.
“The prominence of this deadly cancer is not diminishing,” Sen. Joyce Broadsword, R-Sagle, told the Senate. “It is the only cancer for which we know the exact cause: HPV, human papilloma virus.” New methods of screening could eliminate the disease, she said.
The resolution, SCR110, is being sponsored by Broadsword and co-sponsored by eight other female legislators, including Rep. Mary Lou Shepherd, D-Prichard, plus Rep. Bob Ring, R-Caldwell, a physician.
If the resolution also passes the House, the idea will compete with other proposals for interim legislative study committees. Legislative leaders will make the final call on which studies are to be launched.
