Police honor standout volunteers

The Spokane Police Department recognized its outstanding volunteers Wednesday at City Hall. . Those honored were:

Leonard Lemay (Senior) Award – David Grant, longtime South Hill resident. Grant is a three-year volunteer with 2,900 hours, 871 last year.

Ironman Award – Norm Evans, a 30-year Spokane resident, Evans has volunteered 7,625 hours in four years, 1,661 in 2004.

Senior Rookie of the Year – Linda Wallick, North Side resident. Began volunteering in September 2003 and has 981 hours overall and 784 hours in 2004.

Senior Leadership Award – Greg Zaccaria, North Side resident with 8,100 hours in 14 years 494 last year.

Reserve Officer Rookie of the Year – Cory Lyons, who started in 2000 and put in 2,927 hours. In February 2004 moved up in reserves, where he has put in 1,135 hours.

Reserve Officer Leadership Award – Jay Kernkamp, Whitworth College graduate and longtime West Side resident. Volunteered 2,000 hours in three years, including 592 hours last year.

Reserve Officer of the Year – Ron Van Tassel, a five-year volunteer with more than 3,400 hours, including 980 hours last year.

COOP Rookie of the Year – Ian Ocapan, Spokane Community College student who has worked 209 hours in six months.

COOP Leadership Award – Ken DeCataldo, an SCC graduate who has compiled 1,149 hours overall and 419 in 2004.

COOP of the Year – Rhiannon Leppert, a student at SCC who worked 335 hours in 2003 and the same last year.

Explorer Co-Rookies of the Year – Brittney Taylor, North Central High School student, and Jacob Pernsteiner, Ferris High student. Both students have been in the program 16 months. Taylor has donated 624 hours, and Pernsteiner has worked 389 hours.

Explorer Leadership Award – Tricia Beck, NC student and Explorers captain. In three years, she has worked 2,600 hours, 1,294 last year.

Explorer of the Year Award –Ty Madison, Rogers High graduate with 2,600 hours in three years, 1,281 hours last year.
