Prudential group honors Mt. Spokane’s Karsevar

Alice Karsevar, a junior at Mt. Spokane High School has been honored for her volunteer service with a state Certificate of Excellence from the 2005 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

The award is presented annually by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The award honors young people across America for outstanding community service.

Karsevar also has received a President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, which recognizes Americans who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities.

School principal John Hook describes Karsevar as “an outstanding student who has been involved in student government and volunteers extensively in senior citizen facilities giving back to others.”

Annual band, strings concert

Spokane Public Schools elementary music program will present its annual band and strings concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Spokane Arena.

The concert features more than 2,000 boys and girls from every elementary school in the district who will be performing 16 separate pieces.

Fifth- and sixth-grade children will play strings, woodwinds, percussion and brass instruments under the direction of conductors from throughout the district.

Rogers High School steel drum band also will perform.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the public is invited. Donations will be accepted to support district music programs.

Scholars candidates named

Jonathan Steenblik, a senior at St. George’s School and Annie Virnig, a senior at Lewis and Clark High School, have been selected as two of the 2,600 candidates in the 2005 Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 2.8 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year.

Candidates are selected based on their performance on either the College Board SAT or ACT assessment scores.

Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors.

Dr. Seuss’ birthday celebration

All children accompanied by an adult are invited to attend a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, at Rogers High School, 1622 E. Wellesley Ave.

The event will include literacy activities, arts and crafts, face painting, family photos, refreshments for the whole family and a free book for each child.
