What’s old parlor stove worth?

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have an old heating stove that is made of cast iron with chrome and brass trim. It appears to be quite old and is in near mint condition. How can I find out its value? — Shawn, Bellevue, Neb.

A: Old stoves have become a hot collectible, especially the more elaborate models that were crafted for front parlors. I suggest you begin your investigation by contacting the Antique Stove Association, 2617 Riverside, Houston, TX 77004. Two dealers who might also be helpful are Richard Richardon, Good Time Stove Company, P.O. Box 306, Goshen, MA 01032; and Mike Tainor, Mike’s Stove Works, 98 Webster St., Haverhill, MA 01830.

Q: Where can we find the value of a letter that we think is signed by Abraham Lincoln? — Tony, Crossville, Tenn.

Q: I have old land grants signed by Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren and John Tyler. Any value? — Ed, Oakwood, Ill.

A: The first thing to do is find an expert who can help you determine if the signatures are authentic. Three established dealers who will help you in that area are Brian Kathenes, P.O. Box 482, Hope, NJ 07844; Caroline Birenbaum, c/o Swann Galleries, 104 East 25th St., New York, NY 10010; and Ray Nugent, Nugent Appraisal Services, P.O. Box 11984, Naples, FL 34101. Always remember to get several opinions before you agree to a sale.
