Chavez alleges plot

Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuela’s presidential guard has boosted security measures to protect President Hugo Chavez in response to an alleged assassination plot, a government official said Tuesday.

Information Minister Andres Izarra provided no details regarding the new security for Chavez, a self-styled “revolutionary” who has accused the Bush administration of being behind a purported plot to kill him.

Government officials, including Izarra, have said they have evidence of a conspiracy to assassinate Chavez, but will not make it public.

Officials in Washington have repeatedly denied the U.S. involvement in such an alleged plot to kill Chavez.
