Central Valley puts halt to LC’s big streak

Mead’s streak remains intact.

Jay Vela scored in the 75th minute Wednesday night as Central Valley opened the Greater Spokane League boys soccer season with a 1-0 win over Lewis and Clark that ended the Tigers’ 37-match league winning streak.

Mead set the standard by winning 39 consecutive matches during the 1980s.

LC, the three-time GSL champion, had won 51 of its last 56 matches overall. Last year’s Tigers finished 18-3 while placing fourth at the State 4A tournament.

Josh Antles set up the winning goal for the Bears with a pass to the middle. Vela dribbled past the final Tigers defender and beat goalkeeper Adam Reynolds from 8 yards out.

Ryan Skay posted the shutout by registering six saves.

Ferris was the last team to defeat LC in a GSL match.

In other openers, Keith Kirsch scored at 57 and 77 minutes as Mt. Spokane rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat visiting Ferris 3-2 in a meeting of league favorites. The Saxons led 2-0 after Kyle Yonago’s score at 31 minutes. … Andy Largent scored twice to help Shadle Park hold on for a 4-3 win at Mead. Ian Matson of Mead recorded a hat trick, including goals at 70 and 76 minutes. … Keith Realing assisted on goals by Bryan Hendricks and Mario Robles as University posted a 3-1 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep. … Cameron Bowman scored the first goal, had seven first-half shots on goal, and played goalkeeper in the second half to guide West Valley to a 4-1 win over visiting Rogers. … Cole Abramson had one goal and two assists during the first 24 minutes to launch East Valley toward a 7-0 win at North Central. … Ben Parker piled up two goals and one assist during the first 31 minutes, and Cheney went on to a 7-0 win at Clarkston.

Softball

Michelle Tully pitched a two-hitter and Laura Christianson had three hits as Gonzaga Prep opened the GSL season with an 11-1 win at East Valley. The Knights were hurt by seven errors.
