Casino waitresses sue
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Two casino cocktail waitresses have filed a discrimination complaint over their employer’s weight-limit policy, saying it unfairly burdens women and older employees.
Trisha Hart and Renee Gaud – two Borgata Babes, as the waitresses at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa are known – filed their complaint with the state Division of Civil Rights.
Under the Borgata policy, the casino can fire waitresses who gain more than 7 percent of their body weight and cannot shed it during a three-month leave of absence.
It applies to about 160 women and 50 costumed male bartenders. The men must maintain “V-shaped torsos, broad shoulders and slim waists.”
The policy already is the subject of another lawsuit and is being challenged by the cocktail servers’ union.
Both women took voluntary leaves of absence, blaming stress related to the weight policy, although neither was accused of violating the rule.
The company has said the weight limits are legal and necessary to ensure its servers project a slim, sexy image.
