Cubs ace Kerry Wood will miss more than three weeks after tests Monday showed he has a muscle strain in his right shoulder.

Wood underwent an MRI exam that revealed the problem.

He will not be able to throw for three weeks and then will be re-evaluated by team doctors to devise a strengthening program.

“I feel bad for him. He’s always been a guy who will go out there whenever possible and take his turn,” general manager Jim Hendry said.

Bothered by bursitis in his shoulder during spring training, Wood has had his last two outings cut short.

Swisher lands on DL

Nick Swisher crashed into the right-field wall so hard Sunday he nearly threw up on the field, then later drifted in and out of consciousness while in the emergency room.

The Oakland Athletics placed the rookie outfielder on the 15-day disabled list with an injured right shoulder, but a CT scan showed he didn’t sustain any head trauma in the collision.

“The shoulder was minimal,” Swisher said. “They said, ‘We have to do tests on your brain.’ I said, ‘Just make sure one is in there.’ “

Slain fan’s family settles

The city of Boston paid $5.1 million to the parents of a college student who was killed by a pepper-spray pellet fired by police trying to subdue a riot among Red Sox fans outside Fenway Park after Boston’s playoff win over the New York Yankees last fall.

Victoria Snelgrove, a 21-year-old Emerson College senior, died hours after she was hit in the eye socket with the projectile Oct. 21 after Boston beat the Yankees for the American League pennant.
