University boots Ferris out of GSL baseball lead
University scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday to knock visiting Ferris out of a share of first place in the Greater Spokane League baseball race with a 3-2 decision.
Adam Smith cracked a two-run double to tie the score at 2 and J. D. Peterson followed with an RBI single.
Nick Burger scattered eight hits and struck out six while not surrendering a base on balls, to earn the victory for the Titans (7-7, 7-6).
Pat Burke was 3 for 3 for Ferris (11-4, 10-3). Andy Greenslitt struck out eight Titans in six innings and allowed just five hits.
In other GSL games, Central Valley scored four runs in the bottom of the first to spark a 5-3 victory over visiting Lewis and Clark (5-10, 5-8). Jake Swantko of the Bears went six innings, scattering four hits, striking out six while walking just two. Dale Beach was 2 for 3 with a double, while Brad Johnson stroked a two-run single in the first for the Bears (10-7, 8-7). … George Hamilton ripped a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth to plate the winning run in East Valley’s 8-6 victory over visiting Gonzaga Prep (6-8, 6-7). Bret Riggin, who smacked a pair of doubles, earned his fifth victory in seven decisions for the Knights (9-8, 8-7). Bryce Parker came on to get the final out and earn a save. … Mt. Spokane scored eight runs in the first two innings to take the lead against Cheney (2-14, 2-13) and Jason Gravos pitched the final five innings to earn his first victory of the season, 8-1. Cameron Joslyn was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the league-leading Wildcats (12-2, 11-2), who also got a 2-for-3, three RBI day from Keith Tappe. … Greg Bradley fired a one-hit shutout at visiting Clarkston (3-13, 3-12) in a 1-0 pitching duel at West Valley (8-5, 8-5). The Eagles’ left-hander struck out 10 and did not allow a runner past first base. Casey Sherrill scored the game’s only run on Matt Peterson’s third-inning single. … Shadle Park (10-4, 9-4) erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to score a 12-2 victory over visiting Rogers (6-8, 5-8) in a five-inning game at Jackson Field. Josh Powell and Ian Shook combined for five hits and seven RBIs for the Highlanders, while Chris Bates earned his fifth win of the season. … North Central’s scheduled game at Mead was rained out and rescheduled for today.
•In the Great Northern League, league-leading Pullman scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-2 victory over Chewelah (13-4, 11-3) at Pullman. Kale Stephenson went the distance to earn the victory for the Greyhounds (13-1, 11-1). Kyle Hinrichs ripped a two-run triple in the second for Pullman. … Medical Lake’s game at Deer Park was rained out and rescheduled for today.

Gonzaga Prep’s Sean King carded a four-under-par 68 to win the GSL tournament at Indian Canyon, beating Clarkston’s Joel Dahmen, who shot even-par 72. Ferris golfers Tyler Lynn, Justin Bosch and Sean Bulger all tied for third with 73s, lifting the Saxons to the team title with a 376. Mead was second at 383.

Lakeside needed a sudden-death shootout to down visiting Colville 4-3 in a Great Northern League match at Nine Mile Falls. The teams played to a 3-all tie after regulation and each team scored three goals on five shots in the shootout. Max Reeder scored the match-winner on the sixth shot of overtime. The Eagles needed to score twice in the final 21 minutes of play and receive an 11-save performance from goalkeeper Chris Moore to force the shootout. Lakeside’s fifth victory of the season is the most in school history. … Medical Lake’s Jared Massey needed seven saves to earn his eighth shutout win of the season, a 3-0 win over visiting Deer Park. Lucas Assis sparked the Cardinals with a pair of first-half goals.
