True to form, Trevor Hoffman rated two straight victories in a city where the San Diego Padres have struggled to be just as significant as his 400th save.

Hoffman retired the side in order in the ninth inning Friday to become the third pitcher in major league history to reach the milestone in the Padres’ win against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“Individually, it’s an accomplishment I’m very proud of,” Hoffman said. “Taking a step back, it’s more important that we’re 2-0 on this particular road trip. They’ve played us very difficult since 1999 and most of my career.”

Hoffman joined Lee Smith (478) and John Franco (424) in the 400-save club. He had to face Larry Walker plus the top of the Cardinals’ lineup to do it, then was mobbed by teammates on the field.

“That situation, it’s almost all the time you go out there,” Hoffman said. “You try not to put too much added pressure on yourself, just try to go out and get three outs.”

Hoffman has converted 7 of 9 save chances this season and 400 of 450 in his career. Manager Bruce Bochy said he belongs in the Hall of Fame.

McDonald suspended

Cleveland Indians minor leaguer Darnell McDonald was suspended for 15 games for violating baseball’s minor league steroids policy, raising the total this year to 48 minor leaguers.

“Philadelphia reliever Tim Worrell was placed on the disabled list after telling the team he had “personal psychological issues.”

“Lance Berkman was activated from the disabled list by the struggling Houston Astros and started in an unfamiliar position – first base.

Berkman missed the first month of the season after off-season knee surgery.

He went 0 for 4 in his first game of the season.

“Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra said he needs a month of rest before beginning rehab after surgery last week on the ruptured tendon in his left groin.

Garciaparra said the doctors told him the tear was worse than anticipated, but wouldn’t take any longer to heal.
