Red Sox 6, Athletics 5: At Boston, Jason Varitek’s ninth-inning, two-run shot down the right-field line with one out against Octavio Dotel gave Boston a victory over Oakland, which had taken the lead on Eric Byrnes’ two-run homer in the top of the inning.

Blue Jays 12, Royals 9: At Toronto, Alex Rios hit a go-ahead double, and Toronto scored five times in the eighth inning to rally past Kansas City.

White Sox 5, Devil Rays 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Orlando Hernandez took a two-hitter into the seventh, helping Chicago to a victory over Tampa Bay.

Tigers 6, Rangers 5: At Arlington, Texas, Carlos Pena’s single off the glove of first baseman Mark Teixeira broke an eighth-inning tie and Detroit went on to a victory over Texas.

Orioles 7, Twins 4: At Baltimore, B.J. Surhoff singled home the tiebreaking run in the eighth and resilient Baltimore defeated Minnesota.

Indians 9, Angels 3: At Anaheim, Calif., Ben Broussard homered and had three hits in his first game in the cleanup spot this season, helping Cleveland beat Los Angeles.

National League

Brewers 5, Phillies 2: At Milwaukee, Junior Spivey’s three-run double off Ryan Madson in the eighth sent Milwaukee to a win over Philadelphia.

Padres 7, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, Tim Stauffer repeatedly pitched out of jams of his making during his big league debut, and Ryan Klesko hit a three-run homer that led San Diego to a victory over Cincinnati.

Pirates 7, Giants 2: At San Francisco, Ty Wigginton hit a tiebreaking two-run homer, Daryle Ward added a two-run shot, and Ray Sadler connected for his first major league hit, leading Pittsburgh over San Francisco.

Cubs 4, Mets 3 (10): At Chicago, Derrek Lee homered leading off the 10th, giving Chicago a victory over New York.

Rockies 6, Braves 5: At Denver, Todd Greene hit a game-winning, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth after Atlanta had scored three runs in the top half of the inning, giving Colorado a victory.

Diamondbacks 3, Nationals 2: At Phoenix, Chad Tracy hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth and Arizona beat Washington.

Marlins 2, Astros 1: At Miami, Dontrelle Willis improved to a major league-best 7-0 by allowing one run and six hits in eight innings, and Damion Easley’s two-run homer sent Florida to a victory over Houston.

Cardinals 9, Dodgers 3: At St. Louis, Larry Walker had three of St. Louis’ season-high 19 hits and drove in three runs, backing a strong seven-inning effort by Jeff Suppan in a victory over Los Angeles.
