Teresa’s View
Anyone who drives a classic car knows that legends sometimes don’t live up to one’s memory. And if reality has its drawbacks, updated icons often fall short of the original. Until now. The all-new 2005 Mustang is nostalgia, only better. It has everything you loved about the original with all the modern conveniences and comfort we’ve come to expect. The new Mustang is faster, safer, more agile and — dare I say it? — even better looking.
The first serious redesign in over 40 years is a nod to Mustangs past. From its distinctive fastback profile to the three-element lights on its tail, the impact is visceral.
The ‘Stang is offered in two trims — base with a V-6 engine and the up-level GT. Each comes with a choice of a deluxe or premium version. A convertible is promised by summer.
The standard engine is a 4.0-liter V-6. At the heart of the GT is a 4.6-liter all-aluminum V-8 that cranks out 300 horsepower. In nostalgic terms, the new engine is more than 50 percent more powerful than the small-block 289-cubic-inch V-8 that motivated the 1964 model.
From the all-new chassis to the revised suspension system, the Mustang adds without distracting. Performance-minded drivers won’t be disappointed with the firm, yet refined ride. Acceleration is exhilarating and my GT Premium coupe tester made all the right noises. I still have the smile on my face.
Inside, shiny chrome frames the dual gauge pods and each of the air vents that stretch across the vintage dash. The driver caresses a classic three-spoke wheel.
The 2005 Mustang is longer, wider and taller than any of its predecessors. Pushing the wheels to the four corners carved out an extra 6 inches of wheelbase, increasing passenger volume by 13 cubic feet. However, the extra room isn’t especially noticeable in the back seat where quarters remain cramped.
The downside? There’s precious little storage and fuel economy is only passable. Shorter drivers are at a disadvantage trying to see over a tall dash and even taller hood. But the biggest problem with the new Pony may be finding a dealer that has one.
What Is It?: The 2005 Mustang is an all-American, two-door sports coupe — and soon to be convertible. The base coupe is still the lowest priced rear-wheel drive sports car in America.
Gadget Rating: 7.5 out of 10. Features unheard of on a Pony car past are standard today, starting with air conditioning, cruise control, CD player, rear window defogger, keyless remote entry, power windows, mirrors and door locks. ABS with traction control is an available option on the V-6, but standard on the GT.
Favorite Feature: The Mustang has an industry-first, color-configurable instrument panel. Owners can mix and match 125 different backlighting colors. Yeah, it’s cool.
Bottom Line: To quote Paris Hilton, it’s hot.
