Let children follow own path

The Spokesman-Review

I’ve had enough of the ” When Parents Cry Foul” series in the Review. This stuff has addressed social issues that have affected all of us at one point in our lives.

I know a man who was a 6-foot-2 athletic type that excelled at all sports. He had a son who grew into a 6-5 inside linebacker type who didn’t have the interest his dad had in sports. Instead, he excelled in art, theater, and chorus.

The 6-2 dad couldn’t be more supportive and proud of his son had he become a sports guy. The reason? The 6-2 dad doesn’t have his own ego tied up in his son’s accomplishments. He doesn’t see the need to relive his sports successes through his son. As a result, his son has gained the proper amount of self esteem and integrity that comes from following his own path and yet receiving unbridled support from mom and dad, the most important people in his life. The strength of character that grows from such a bond serves an individual forever.

Concerning the specifics of the series, kids reserve the right to do their own thing and sometimes it has nothing to do with parent’s pre-conceived expectations.
