Lewis, Freeman earn grand win at district
Shane Lewis hit a grand slam in the fifth inning Friday to power third-seeded Freeman (9-9) to an 11-5 win over second-seeded Colfax (4-11) in a District 7 1A baseball tournament opener at Colfax.
Freeman took a 4-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings, courtesy of three Bulldogs errors. Colfax left the bases loaded three times.
The tournament resumes at top-seeded Newport today. Freeman will play the host Grizzlies (20-0) at noon for a state berth. Colfax will meet No. 4 Kettle Falls (6-12) at 10 a.m. in a loser-out game. The first-game winner and second-game loser will meet at 2 p.m. for the No. 2 berth to state.
Also in the tournament, Josh Tiede had two hits and two RBIs to lead host Newport to a 5-1 win over Kettle Falls. Nick Collison, who entered in the fourth, improved to 12-0.
Softball
Amanda Grumbach pitched a three-hitter and Brittany Strandberg singled home Kyanna Somday in the seventh as Curlew defeated Selkirk 3-2 in the title game of the Panorama League tournament at Kettle Falls. Curlew (15-8) earned the right to host four games of the District 7 B tournament, which begins Wednesday. The Cougars will play at 11 a.m. against Monday’s pigtail winner between Odessa (14-8) and Springdale (7-13). Panorama No. 3 Inchelium (19-4) will meet Davenport (15-5) at 12:45 p.m. at Curlew. In district openers at Liberty, the host Lancers (17-5) will play Panorama No. 4 Republic (12-12) at 11 a.m., followed by Selkirk (17-3) against Almira/Coulee-Hartline (10-9) at 12:45 p.m. … Curlew reached the title game by defeating Inchelium 1-0. Strandberg’s RBI single in the first backed Grumbach, who pitched a two-hitter to overcome the 12-strikeout performance of the Hornets’ Destiny Christianson. … Selkirk reached the championship with a five-inning, 10-0 win over Republic. Jessica Pichette of the Rangers pitched a one-hitter and walked one. … In the third-place game, Steven Carson pitched a six-inning perfect game and Leah Dick hit a grand slam in the fifth as Inchelium defeated Republic 18-0. … Amanda Krieg fired a one-hitter as Springdale earned the No. 5 spot with a 9-2 win over St. George’s (9-13). … Inchelium made the third-place game when Christianson hurled a five-hitter, with seven strikeouts and one walk, during an 8-5 win over Springdale. … Republic reached the third-place game when Randi Beck went 4 for 4 with five RBIs to guide the Tigers to a five-inning, 19-4 win over St. George’s.
“Amber Hesselgesser finished the day 6 for 8 with three doubles and three runs as Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls (9-7, 7-5) posted a 3-2, 9-3 sweep at Deer Park (2-18, 0-12) in the final Great Northern League games for both. Other GNL teams complete the regular season today.
Track and field
Odessa boys (138 1/2 points) and Reardan’s girls (119) won team titles at the Bi-County League meet at Spokane Falls Community College. Odessa’s boys winners were Matt Cronrath, 3,200-meter run, 10 minutes, 26 seconds; Jeremy Jasman, 300 hurdles, 41.43; and Daniel Costlow, shot put, 41 feet. Jasman and Costlow were also on the winning 400 relay, and among the four Tigers in the top seven in the triple jump. Jenny Knezovich (800), Kylie Casselberry (300 hurdles) and Julie Jordan (javelin) were winners for Reardan’s girls. Wilbur-Creston’s Braidy Haden swept the boys 100, 200 and 400, and Almira/Coulee-Hartline’s Justin Carstensen won the pole vault, long jump and triple jump. Girls double winners were: Kaylee Semprimoznik, Davenport, 100, long jump; Kysa Cronrath, Odessa, 1,600 and 3,200; and Destry Killian, Lind-Ritzville, 100 hurdles and high jump. Killian also ran on the champion 400 relay.
“Asotin’s boys (129 points) and girls (134) swept the team titles at the Whitman County meet in Colfax. Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia placed second in both meets, 35 points behind the Panthers boys and 26 points behind the girls. Tyler Swenson led the Asotin boys’ charge, winning the discus (112-8) and shot put (38-3 1/4 ), and placing fourth in the javelin. Rachel Gundy powered the Panthers girls by winning the 800 (2:39.71), the 1,600 (6:02.87) and 3,200 (12:27.1), while placing third in the 200 (30.4). Jared Mills of T-O/R swept the boys hurdles and took second in the triple jump. Garfield-Palouse’s Jesse Cole won the boys 100 and 200. On the girls’ side, T-O/R’s Clarissa Harston won the long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles; teammate Ashley Stabl captured the 400 and 300 hurdles, and placed second in the 200; and LaCrosse-Washtucna’s Pam Passmore took the javelin and discus, and placed third in the shot put. The top four in each event advance to the District 9 B meet.
Postponements
The District 8 4A baseball, softball and tennis tournaments were rained out. … Baseball will pick up at 10 a.m. today at Avista Stadium with Ferris (15-6) facing Shadle Park (14-5). University (12-8) will take on Mt. Spokane (15-4) at 12:30 p.m. Losers will play a loser-out game at 3, and the championship game is scheduled for 5:30. … Softball will resume at Whitworth College on Monday, with Mead (18-3) facing U-Hi (17-2) at 3 p.m. and Shadle (19-1) meeting Mt. Spokane (17-4) at 5. The tournament will conclude Tuesday with Monday’s losers meeting at 3 p.m. for the third and fourth seeds to regional and the winners facing off at 5 for the district title and the top two regional seeds. … Tennis championships will resume at 3 p.m. Monday at U-Hi.
