Pullman pulls out win in State 2A boys soccer opener
Mike Thomas scored 2 minutes into the second half and goalkeeper Andrew Wilson made it stand up as the Pullman Greyhounds beat the Highland Scotties 1-0 in Pullman in the first round of the State 2A boys soccer tournament on Tuesday.
Brandon Hammond picked up an assist on the lone goal of the match as Pullman (17-1) advanced to a Saturday match against Wahluke, a 3-1 winner over Othello.
Wilson made six saves to notch the shutout.
Pullman outshot Highland (14-3) 13-8 in the match.
“Nick Andreas had a goal and two assists to lead East Valley-Yakima (11-6) to a 5-1 victory over the Medical Lake Cardinals in a State 2A match at Medical Lake. Lucas Assis scored for the Cardinals on an assist from Jason Gomez. ML ended its season with a 13-6 record. EV will next play Connell.
Softball
Kim Weber got the job done on the mound and at the plate for Colton in the first round of the District 9 B tournament. Weber allowed just two hits, while striking out seven and went 3 for 4 with a triple, double and four runs batted in to lead Colton, the top seed from the Whitman County League, to a 12-2 win over Blue Mountain Conference No. 4 seed Liberty Christian. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Colton will play LaCrosse-Washtucna in the second round. The remainder of the tournament will be played Saturday at the TRAC in Pasco, beginning at 10 a.m. … Jennifer Ayers-Stamper went 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI to lead visiting WCL No. 3 seed L-W to an 11-8 win over BM No. 2 seed DeSales. … BM No. 3 seed Dayton scored seven runs in the top of the second inning and held on for a 9-7 road win over WCL No. 2 seed Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia. Dayton will play Touchet in a second-round matchup. … Sadie Short belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift BM No. 1 seed Touchet to a 6-5 win over WCL No. 4 seed Garfield-Palouse in Touchet. … Loser-out games Saturday pit T-O-R against Gar-Pal and Liberty Christian against DeSales.
Baseball
Shane Lewis went 2 for 4 with a triple, a double and three runs batted in, and tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead Freeman (11-10) to a 7-4 victory over Oroville in a play-in game in Okanogan for the State 1A tournament. Freeman will open the state tourney against Warden on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Wenatchee. Lewis allowed just one first-inning run and one hit before Oroville scored three runs in the top of the seventh. … In the other play-in game at Okanogan, Nick Collison struck out 15 in a complete-game two-hitter to lead Newport (22-0) to a 4-1 win over Tonasket. The Grizzlies will open the state tourney against Royal City on Saturday in Moses Lake.
Boys golf
Northwest Christian qualified three players for state and won the District 7 B tournament at Esmeralda Golf Course. John Gresham topped NWC with a third-place finish and a two-round total of 163. Also headed to state for NWC are Jesse Vowels (164, tie fourth) and Jared McConahy (165, sixth). Lind-Ritzville’s Jon McPherson earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 141 and will be joined at state with teammate Logan Kennedy (171, 10th). Other qualifiers are: Andrew Tamura (162, second) and Joseph Lindermann (168, eighth) of Valley Christian; Mike Johnson (167, seventh) and Damian McCartney (170, ninth) of Wilbur-Creston; and Scott Stone (164, tie fourth) of Almira/Coulee-Hartline.
“Pullman won the District 7 2A tournament at Hangman Valley Golf Course and will send three players to the state tourney. Pullman’s Dillon Williams was the medalist with a two-round total of 8-over 150, one shot better than runner-up Tyler Morris of Riverside. Also headed to state from Pullman are Brian Pan (156, fourth) and Jeff Jones (159, fifth). Morris will be joined by teammate Andrew Clark (166, seventh). Other state qualifiers are Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls’ Brandon Filion (154, third) and Deer Park’s Scott Huffman (162, sixth).
Track and field
Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls’ girls and Riverside’s boys are the leaders after the first day of the District 7 2A championships, held at Riverside. Lakeside’s girls have a comfortable 80-43 lead over second-place Pullman, while Riverside’s boys hold a 36-32 edge over second-place Lakeside, with Medical Lake (31) and Colville (30) right behind. Three boys individual champions were crowned on the first day and they all hailed from Medical Lake. David Jacob won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 6 seconds; Steven Wesley went 42 feet, 5 inches to win the triple jump; and Richard Wilkie won the shot put with a throw of 48-5 3/4 . On the girls side Pullman and Lakeside each had a pair of winners.
Pullman freshman Cory Druffel won the 1,600 in 5:21.0, while teammate Danielle Haynes finished first in the long jump with a leap of 16-9. Lakeside’s Ali Forsyth was tops in the pole vault, clearing 9-6, and Kim Gibson won the discus with a throw of 117-2. Deer Park’s Mackenzie Johnson won the high jump for the third straight year, this time clearing a meet-record 5-4.
