Store offers eclectic finds

The Habitat for Humanity store on East Trent has added an “Eclectic Corner” to its sprawling facility. Now, in addition to good deals on hardware and building materials, shoppers can browse through a room full of interesting vintage items.

Sam Rose is a volunteer at the store. He has an interest in antiques and collectibles and noticed that when vintage items were donated to the store, they were often placed with the regular surplus building materials and other donations. That made them hard to spot for collectors or anyone interested in older items. It also meant that the store was missing out on an opportunity to bring in a little more money for the non-profit agency.

Working with store manager Jeff Howard, Rose has carved a niche for older items out of unused space at the rear of the store.

Now donations are sorted and the older, or more unusual items, are placed in the Eclectic Corner.

The current inventory includes crystal chandeliers, a set of seats – with their original leather upholstery – from the downtown railroad depot, chunky, but functional, 1950s refrigerators, and even a dramatic light fixture from The Davenport Hotel.

Architectural salvage, such as old windows and doors, and carved trim, will also be available.

Rose and Howard say the Eclectic Corner inventory will be refreshed daily to keep frequent shoppers happy. If the space proves to be popular, they will move the vintage items to the front of the store and expand the floor space.

The Habitat Store is 805 E. Trent. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. For more information call 535-9517
