Indians 6, Athletics 3: At Cleveland, Ben Broussard and Jhonny Peralta each drove in two runs and Cleveland beat Oakland to extend the Athletics’ losing streak to seven games. The Athletics have lost 19 of 23.

Red Sox 17, Yankees 1: At New York, Edgar Renteria hit a grand slam, Manny Ramirez got four singles and the Boston Red Sox broke out of their slump with 27 hits in a rout of New York. New York allowed its most hits since giving up a franchise-record 28 on Sept. 29, 1928, in a 19-10 loss at Detroit.

Twins 4, Blue Jays 3: At Toronto, Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings, and Juan Castro and Shannon Stewart hit back-to-back homers to lead Minnesota over Toronto.

Tigers 5, Orioles 3: At Baltimore, Omar Infante homered to break an eighth-inning tie, and Jason Johnson (3-4) earned his first win since April 18, pitching eight solid innings to lead Detroit over Baltimore.

Angels 14, Royals 1: At Anaheim, Calif., Garret Anderson drove in five runs with a homer and a three-run double, and Steve Finley and Chone Figgins each had three RBIs as Los Angeles easily beat Kansas City.

White Sox at Rangers (ppd): At Arlington, Texas, the Chicago-Texas game was postponed by rain, pushing back Jon Garland’s shot at becoming the first nine-game winner in the major leagues. The game won’t be made up until the White Sox return to Texas on Aug. 29-31.

National League

Mets 6, Marlins 1: At Miami, Mike Piazza had three hits and three RBIs – his first since May 9 – and Kazuhisa Ishii allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings to help New York defeat Dontrelle Willis and Florida. Miguel Cairo had three of New York’s 14 hits and scored three runs.

Pirates 9, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, Dave Williams allowed only one hit in seven innings and former GU standout Jason Bay hit a two-run home run in Pittsburgh’s four-run first en route to defeating Cincinnati.

Astros 9, Brewers 6: At Milwaukee, Wandy Rodriguez got his first major league win and Houston ruined the return of Ben Sheets to Milwaukee’s rotation.

Cardinals 3, Nationals 1: At St. Louis, Jeff Suppan allowed four hits in seven dominant innings and Jim Edmonds homered for the second straight game, helping St. Louis to its fifth straight victory by defeating Washington.

Cubs 5, Rockies 1: At Chicago, Derrek Lee hit two homers for the second straight game and the fourth time this season, leading injury-plagued Chicago to a victory over Colorado. Lee leads the N.L. with 16 homers.

Phillies 12, Braves 5: At Atlanta, Jason Michaels homered and drove in a career-high five runs, Pat Burrell had three RBIs in his return to the Philadelphia lineup and the Phillies beat Atlanta.

Padres 5, Giants 3: At San Francisco, Phil Nevin hit a three-run homer in the eighth, and San Diego rallied against San Francisco’s beleaguered bullpen for the win.

Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 4: At Phoenix, Giovanni Carrara walked Kelly Stinnett with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to give Arizona a comeback win over Los Angeles. Tony Clark led off the ninth with his 200th career double.
