Sun Devils cruise to win over Cougs

The Spokesman-Review

Washington State’s baseball season ended on a sour note after No. 22 Arizona State pinned a 7-2 defeat on the Cougars and completed a three-game Pacific-10 Conference sweep in Tempe, Ariz.

Andrew Romine, Willy Fox and Colin Curtis combined for seven hits and five runs batted in to lead the Sun Devils (34-22, 15-9).

James Freeman (7-8) took the loss for WSU (21-37, 1-23). He lasted just three innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits. Kaeo Rubin and Jay Miller each plated a run during WSU’s two-run fifth inning.

•Matt Lane drove in five runs with a pair of home runs to lead the Washington Huskies (33-22, 12-12) to a 16-5 victory and a three-game sweep over the UCLA Bruins (15-41, 4-20) in Pac-10 play in Los Angeles.

Sophomore Kyle Parker (8-7) allowed four runs in the first two innings, then gave up just one hit over his final five innings of work to pick up the win for Washington.

The Huskies will find out this morning whether they made the 64-team NCAA Tournament field.

•Mt. Hood scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning and then withstood a pair of two-run rallies to ease past Community Colleges of Spokane 9-6 at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges tournament in Longview, Wash.

Kevin Young had three hits and two RBIs for the Sasquatch (32-14), who finished fourth.

Rowing

The Washington Huskies finished ninth at the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

The Huskies varsity 4 finished third in the grand final, while the junior varsity 8 won the petite final.

Washington is one of only four schools to finish in the Top 10 in team competition every year since the NCAA began sponsoring women’s rowing in 1997. Brown, Princeton and Virginia are the other three.

Top-ranked California overtook Princeton in the varsity 8 grand final to complete a perfect season. The last crew to go undefeated en route to the national championship was Washington in 2002.

•Three area women helped Western Washington University earn the NCAA Div. II national title.

Rowers Amelia Whitcomb (Ferris High) and Lindsay Mann-King (Colville High) helped the varsity 8 win the grand final. Rower Samantha Marikis (Republic High) was a member of the Vikings’ varsity 4 grand final winners.

Auto racing

Seattle’s Rick Moss took advantage of a late caution to win the 35-lap Washington Midget Racing Association main event on Saturday at Stateline Speedway.

Ephrata’s Kevin Burck overcame a flat tire to win the Northwest Sprint Cars main event.

Scott Earsley won the 20-lap main event in the Outlaw Compact Racing Series.

Prep tennis

Lakeside had three players qualify Saturday for the State 2A tennis tourney at the Yakima Tennis Club.

Kevin Tellez finished fourth to qualify in boys singles play, while Stefanie Richards and Rachel West placed fifth to qualify in girls doubles play.
