There are a lot of news reports about a scary strain of “bird flu” that health officials worry will spread worldwide. However, right now most folks should be thinking about how to protect themselves from regular flu.

Doctors recommend vaccinations now for young children, the elderly and anyone with health problems who could be severely affected by a bout of the flu.

It’s not a bad idea, with cold and flu season at hand, to take stock of your medicine chest. Here are this week’s coupon savings in cold and flu remedies:

• Save 55 cents on any size of NyQuil or DayQuil. Expires Nov. 30.

• Vick’s offers a 55-cent coupon on any size of Cassero cold and flu remedy, any size of Vick’s VaporRub, BabyRub or VapoRub Cream, and any size of Formula 44, Sinex, Vapor Inhaler, VapoSteam or Cough Drops. Expires Nov. 30.

• Save $1 on any 24-count or larger package of Bayer prevention or pain product. Expires Dec. 31.

• Aleve offers a $1 coupon on any cold and sinus or sinus and headache formulas, 10-count or larger, and a 75-cent coupon on any Aleve pain reliever. Expires Dec. 31.

• Tylenol offers a 50-cent coupon on its cold and sore throat medication and a 50-cent coupon on any Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gel caps, 8-hour Caplets or EZ tabs. Expires Dec. 31.
