State teacher group honors Jayce Keeling
Jayce Keeling, Tessera teacher for Spokane Public Schools, received the Washington Association of Educators of the Talented and Gifted Distinguished Leadership Award in Vancouver, Wash., on Oct. 28.
The award is given to a teacher, administrator, school board member, parent volunteer or legislator who has made outstanding contributions to gifted/talented education.
In nominating Keeling, one of her former Tessera students wrote, “Teachers are those in life who demand excellence from themselves and encourage others, with patience, care and humility, to follow their example. Mrs. Keeling is my teacher forever. Teacher – what a beautiful word – a title, a position, a privilege.”
Tessera is a one-day-a-week program at Libby Center for highly capable students in grades 3 through 6. The students represent the top 3 percent of their norm group.
Students are selected for the program on the basis of their academic, intellectual and creative abilities.
The Oaks to host banquet and recitation
The Oaks Classical Christian Academy will host a banquet and recitation at 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Spokane Convention Center.
The free event is open to anyone interested in learning about classical and Christian education. Call 536-5955 to RSVP.
The academy, at 4224 E. Fourth Ave., was established in 1996 and offers classes for grades K-12. Principal Bruce Williams said people may not know what a “classical” education is.
The Oaks is revitalizing trivium education. Based in Latin, it consists of three parts: grammar (facts and rules), dialectic (logic) and rhetoric (expressing thoughts in verbal and written form).
The school is also based on Christian beliefs, and students attend Bible classes.
