Get your car ready for winter

Greg Zyla King Features Syndicate

Q: Greg, I’m a retired woman who has to drive quite a bit in the winter. What should I have my mechanic check to make sure things go well this winter? — Beatrice, Elmira, N.Y.

A: Beatrice, it’s never too soon to plan for winter driving, so you’re ahead of the game already. Here’s what the AAA Auto Club recommends you have your mechanic check: battery, antifreeze, wipers and windshield washer fluid, ignition system, thermostat, lights, flashing hazard lights, exhaust system, heater, brakes, defroster and tires. Also check the oil level and, if necessary, replace existing oil with a winter grade oil (synthetics are best, especially the SAE 5W/30 varieties).

Additionally, I recommend making sure your spare tire has air in it, because all too often a motorist has found his neglected spare is either flat or way low on air, leaving him stranded. Also, gather some emergency supplies if you know you’ll be out regularly in harsh winter weather. Things like a shovel, a five-pound bag of sand, a blanket, some extra warm clothing, emergency flares, food items, jumper cables, and a lighter or some matches will help if you are stranded.
