November 11 marks Veterans Day, a holiday that honors those who have died or fought in all American wars. November 11 is the anniversary of the end of World War I, which ended in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles — signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month between the Allies and Germany. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first holiday observance — called Armistice Day — in 1919. It has been observed since then, though the date has changed a few times and the legal name of the holiday became Veterans Day in 1954.
