Today’s project
Like automobiles and architecture, a classic furniture design might be described as the ideal marriage of form and function. Combining seating and storage in an attractive package with a small footprint, a hall tree is a good example of an American classic.
A great way for woodworkers to create a classic of their own, this handsome do-it-yourself version is perfect for the entryway, living room or even one end of the dining room. The hall tree features a convenient place to hang coats, hats and umbrellas over a generously sized storage bench.
What you need
Easy enough for woodworkers of any skill level, the project is made from straight cuts of standard lumber and plywood (we used poplar and birch, but other woods will work).
What you do
To build, simply cut the pieces to size, sand and assemble using glue and nails. Once the project is assembled, apply finish of choice, install the seat and add coat hooks.
The hall tree measures about 70 inches tall by 45 inches wide by 21 inches deep.
How do order the plan
The Hall Tree plan, No. 934, is $10.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, construction diagrams, a materials list, cutting schedule, a plywood-cutting layout and a toll-free help line for project questions.
A package of three other hall furniture plans, No. C149, is $22.95 and includes a grandfather clock, a curio cabinet and a bookcase with glass doors. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $2. Please include $3 for postage and handling (except catalog-only orders) and allow about two weeks for delivery.
