Investors generally expect stocks to go up as year’s end approaches because they almost always have. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has suffered a fourth-quarter decline just once during the past 10 years, in 1997. That drop was less than 1 percent and didn’t keep the Dow from finishing with a strong annual gain.
