Huskies open season by routing Morgan State
Freshman Jon Brockman scored 17 points and snared 10 rebounds while senior forward Bobby Jones added 18 points – 16 in a frenetic first half – as the revamped Huskies steamrolled Morgan State 118-51 in the first round of the Black Coaches Association Classic on Sunday night in Seattle.
It was the second-highest point total in Washington history. The Huskies beat Chico State 130-67 on Dec. 1, 1992.
Timothy Mathis’ 10 points led the Bears (0-1) of Baltimore, who last season finished sixth at 14-16 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Washington (1-0) next plays Wisconsin-Green Bay tonight.
Jones began the track meet with a breakaway dunk, part of an 11-0 spurt over the game’s first four minutes.
That was one of three fast-break slams in the opening half for Jones, one of Washington’s three senior starters. He added a 3-point basket and finished the period with 16 points.
Washington’s full-court press forced Morgan State into 22 first-half turnovers and 36 overall. The Huskies kept the Bears from reaching double figures in points until 7:08 remained in the first half. By then, the Huskies led 37-11.
Washington’s largest lead was 44 in its runaway first half, 61-17 within the final minute.
(9) Kentucky 71, South Dakota State 54: In Lexington, Ky., sophomore point guard Rajon Rondo had 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead Kentucky past South Dakota State in the first round of the Guardians Classic.
Rekalin Sims added 11 points for the Wildcats. Junior forward Ben Beran led the Jackrabbits with 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting.
(14) West Virginia 61, Wofford 41: In Morgantown, W. Va., Kevin Pittsnogle scored 19 points to lead West Virginia to a victory over Wofford and a berth in the semifinals of the Guardians Classic.
Eric Marshall had 11 points for Wofford and Howard Wilkerson added 10.
Women’s games
(3) LSU 76, (13) Texas Tech 68: In Lubbock, Texas, Seimone Augustus had 32 points and 13 rebounds to lead LSU to a victory over Texas Tech in the Tip-Off Classic.
Sylvia Fowles had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Tigers. LaToya Davis scored 21 points for Texas Tech.
(6) Baylor 84, (8) Georgia 72: In Lubbock, Texas, Sophia Young scored 30 points, rallying Baylor from an 18-point second half deficit to beat Georgia at the Tip-Off Classic. Cori Chambers led Georgia with 17 points.
(25) Oklahoma 80, SMU 43: In Norman, Okla., Courtney Paris had 19 points and 20 rebounds to lead Oklahoma to a win against SMU in the second round of the Preseason Women’s NIT.
Janielle Dodds scored 15 points to lead SMU, which was outrebounded 66-30 and shot 19.4 percent.
