Blue Devils outlast pesky Terriers
J.J. Redick failed to make a 3-pointer and missed two free throws. Other than that, Duke’s season opener went about as expected.
Despite those shooting anomalies, Redick scored 19 points and Shelden Williams added 17 to help the top-ranked Blue Devils hold off pesky Boston University 64-47 Monday night in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off in Durham, N.C.
The Terriers took an early lead and held it for nearly 12 minutes, but Mike Krzyzewski improved to 24-2 in openers since he arrived in Durham as Duke advanced to play Seton Hall.
(8) Kentucky 67, Lipscomb 49: In Lexington, Ky., Rajon Rondo scored a career-high 19 points as the Wildcats held off the Bisons in the second round of the Guardians Classic.
(20) Iowa 86, Maryland-Eastern Shore 41: In Iowa City, Iowa, Jeff Horner and Greg Brunner each scored 16 points to lead the Hawkeyes to a win over the Hawks in the first round of the Guardians Classic.
Women
Ann Strother scored 19 points as Connecticut cruised into the semifinals of the Women’s NIT with an 86-43 win over Indiana State in Storrs, Conn.
The ninth-ranked Huskies (2-0) dominated inside and out to put the game away early. Strother had four of UConn’s seven first-half 3-pointers, including three in a 28-3 run that blew open the game.
