Churches schedule services of thanksgiving

There are as many ways to give thanks at Valley churches this week as there are snowflakes on Mount Spokane.

For some people Thanksgiving is about turkey, pumpkin pie and football, while others choose to give thanks in worship before carving up the bird.

Some of the choices for Thanksgiving worship services are listed below.

Millwood Presbyterian Church will host a family Thanksgiving service at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Child care will be available for children under 3.

The church is at 3223 N. Marguerite Road.

• The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection will host a Thanksgiving Eve service and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The congregations of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church will also participate.

The guest preacher will be Catholic Bishop William Skylstad.

Those attending are asked to bring canned food for the Valley Food Bank.

• A worship service will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave. A dessert potluck will follow.

Food items will be collected for the Cupboard of Love Christmas food boxes.

Christ Lutheran Church will begin worship at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 13009 E. Broadway Ave.. A dessert potluck will follow, and donations of food items will be collected for the Valley Food Bank.

Opportunity Christian Church, 708 N. Pines Road, will celebrate Thanksgiving during a potluck lunch following the 11 a.m. service Sunday. The church will provide the turkey, dressing, rolls and drinks.

Peace Lutheran Church, 4124 N. Harvard Road, will have a Thanksgiving Eve service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Spokane Valley Assembly of God will gather for worship at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. There will be special music and testimonies.

Orthodox bishop in the Valley

Christ the Savior Orthodox Church will host for the first time Bishop Joseph Al-Zehlaoui during special services beginning at 8 a.m. today.

He is the bishop of the Antiochian Orthodox Church Christian Diocese of Los Angeles and the West.

During his visit, the bishop will ordain Duane Adkins, a convert to Orthodox Christianity, as a permanent deacon.

Today’s services begin with matins (morning service) at 8 a.m., a special altar consecration at 9 a.m., the ordination at 10 a.m. and the divine liturgy at 10:30 a.m.

Music at Millwood

Millwood Presbyterian Church will host a free public concert featuring the church’s Chancel Choir, Praise Team, Tintinnabula Bell Choir and Harmony Bells. The concert begins at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road.
