Postcard from Hawaii

LAHAINA, Hawaii – Traveling here with the Gonzaga men’s basketball team for this year’s EA SPORTS Maui Invitational has had special meaning to Vickie Hertz and her husband Steve.

The Hertz’s are staying with the team at the Sheraton Maui Resort – the same place they stayed on their honeymoon almost 34 years ago.

“It’s been absolutely wonderful,” Vickie Hertz said of the couple’s latest venture into Paradise. “The place has grown up a bit, but, then, so have we.”

Vickie said she and her husband, a former Bulldogs baseball player and coach who now serves as the university’s director of athletic relations, have spent much of their spare time laying around on the beach and soaking up the sun. The Hertz’s even went for an evening dip in the Pacific Ocean earlier in the week.

“We went swimming under the stars,” Vickie explained. “It was dreamy.”

And when they got back from dinner that night, they found a bottle of champagne – courtesy of one of Steve’s former baseball players – waiting in their room.

When asked if her husband is still as romantic as he was on their honeymoon, Vickie quickly replied, “You bet.

“And he’s even better looking.”
