‘Day use only’ proposed for High Bridge

Steve Adams, representing the Latah Creek Community Development Neighborhood committee has requested that the city of Spokane Park Board designate High Bridge Park as a “day use only” park.

The Latah neighborhood group wants access hours to be between dawn and dusk with park access shut off to vehicles by gates after dusk on Marquette Street, which connects A Street to 11th Avenue.

“It’s a beautiful little park, and it’s in a part of town that’s developing. This park just gets a lot of traffic – people looking for different things late at night and during the day, too,” Adams said. “We’re trying to clean up the use of the park to make it family friendly.”

Taylor Bressler, park operations division manager said he’s in the process of getting feedback from other city departments that would be affected by an evening closing of Marquette Street.

“It’s a no-man’s road. It’s not a designated street. It’s on park property so it falls to us, yet we’re not able to do what we wish with it. And people that live close to the street use it as an access to their home,” Bressler said.

The city parks already have rules for use. They are technically closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. during daylight-saving time and from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. during standard time, with the exception of Riverfront Park, which is open until midnight.

These hours were set up to accommodate the golf courses.

“I think it’s a nice idea, but it also would be nice if the police would enforce the driving through after 11 p.m., but everyone has their own aggravation right now with the budget,” Bressler said.

Bressler said he hopes the High Bridge Park matter will be addressed at an upcoming Park Board meeting.
