October brings falling leaves and plunging temperatures. It’s also the month for winter preparations. Here’s a quick checklist for homeowners:

Outdoors

Weatherproof your pots and planters. Remove dirt and dead plants so moisture doesn’t cause cracking when freezing weather strikes.

Store or cover outdoor furniture.

Get the garage organized. Put all those cold-weather tools right where you can get your hands on them. Store summer items.

Clean gutters.

Check downspouts for blockage.

Disconnect garden hoses.

Have sprinkler systems “blown-out.”

Indoors

Stock up on pellets and firewood.

Check windows and doors for leaks.

Days are darker and the lights are on longer. Switch to energy-saving lightbulbs.

Inspect the dryer vent.
